What should the lights on a PS3 do?

I have just fixed my friends PS3 as it had the YLOD, I have reassembled most of the PS3. Before I put the cover on it, I powered the PS3 up to see if it worked. To my suprise it didn't blow up in my face! Anyway, on connecting the power I got the red standby light. I pressed the on button on the PCB and I got a green light. Because I am a PC gamer I don't have a clue what the lights mean, and because I'm stupid I didn't take his lead to connect it to the TV. I assumed that you could use a normal RGB lead, but apparently Sony want's to rip you off on them as well.

So, what does a solid green light mean? If I hold down the power button (right one) it either beeps 3 times or the green light flashes and then goes red into standby. By pressing the left hand button it always beeps 3 times, no matter what way I do it. So have I fixed it, or totally knackered it? I would be suprised if I have actually fixed it!!

The journey into that horrible machine was scary. Dust cloged everything, then I discovered that the cooling was done via 2 horrible aluminium heatpipes that don't make proper contact with the CPU/GPU. The heat then travels via heatpipes into the smallest heatsink I have ever seen. Sony undoubtebly designed this machine to break after a year or two. And thats why I will never buy a console and always build my own PC- Dell etc are just as bad!

I just found out that if you hold down the power button, it changes/resets what cable it uses. So if you have always connected using HDMI and try connecting it using SCART, you need to hold down the power button until it beeps twice so it resets back to the default..and then apparently works with SCART again. I'm about to try it.

No idea apart from that though.

Cheers. I don't have it attatched to any form of TV so that may be why it beeps 3 times at me! Good luck with yours!

If you hold in the eject button, it beeps 3 times if there is no disc. Everything sounds like it's working as it's supposed to.

Yeah red light is standby, green light is when the system is powered on and it beeps when you press the eject button. It will beep once if there's a disc and you eject it, and it will beep three times if you press it when there's no disc. :)

What happens if you hold down the power button while the green light is on? Currently it either beeps three times or the light flashes and it goes onto standby.

OK, it works fine. I have sucessfully fixed a YLOD without ever owning a PS3. I'm genuinly proud it didn't blow up in my face when I turned it on!

Scarily, I appear to have a screw left over! :O

Oh yes, and if you are wondering what I did, I put the mobo in the oven at 220oC for 10 mins. Unfortuantly I forgot to remove the CMOS battery, so it exploded and I had to get another one. Only £3 from that highstreet overpriced computer hardware/ electronics store!
