What size PSU do I actually need?

Hey everyone,

Currently have a corsair 850W plus bronze modular PSU

In the middle of downsizing my rig as I don't use it to game anymore,

Have no intention of dual-wielding GPU's anymore and going to be getting a 350D case next month,

May overclock my CPU at some point but not a necessity,

Can I get away with a decent 550/600W PSU? Needs to modular though,

Any recommendations would be great,

Thanks!

Just bought a 550W EVGA Supernova, gold rated, for my sons m-itx build, modular and seems good quality so far. (3750k, 280X, 2 x SSD drives, 4 fans).

Given your signature a 550W should be fine but I dont know if it will handle much more.

Thanks for the input guys,

If in future I want to go to a Skylake 'k' processor and a better graphics cards would I be better suited going for a 650W? I don't mind spending an extra 10/15 if it will future proof it a bit as I'm sure down the road I will probably go this way,

Thanks!

It won't do any harm to have a 650W psu. I would go with the G2 for the extra warranty 2 years warranty.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £88.49
(includes shipping: £10.50)

You may as well keep what you have. You won't gain anything by changing the PSU. Your 850W PSU will consume the same power as a similarly rated 550W or 650W PSU.

I know it will consume the same amount of power as it is system dependant, just thought that maybe a new PSU wouldn't go amiss seeing as this one is getting to around 5 years old now,

Any rule of thumb for PSU lifespans?

I would've thought it would depend on the quality of the PSU.

The PSU's in my PC's are both a couple of years old now (Seasonic G550 & SF HX550) I've had Corsair HX PSU's that lasted 2-3 years tops before expiring. Having said that there's a five year old Corsair VX450 in Dad's PC, but its barely breaking a sweat with the spec it has.

Oldest I know of if its still there, is a 9 year old Seasonic S12 430 mk1 in my sisters pc I built for her. Been in a fair few of my build's before that.
