I am trying to put together a new rig but I am not sure of the size of PSU I need to safely run it. In the past I have always gone for the safe side and probably gone over by several 100 watts.

Kit list is as follows:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,130.50
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Was looking at the 1000W XFX PSU as I have used XFX in the past and they were reliable. But then I though wow that's a lot of wattage. I am currently running a full water loop with 2 x D5 pumps on a 2500K @ 4.4 with 2 x 7950s in crossfire all off an 850W. But the unknown factor for me is how much power does a 980 need ? I assume a lot more than my current set up ??

The GTX 980 isn't very good value for money. You could easily fit a 980 ti in there if you go with cheaper ram/cooler/motherboard.

Also I would go with a different case. The Air 240 has height issues with some gpu's. Something like the Phanteks Evolv ITX might be better.

This is a cracking deal at the moment:-

Just be aware that the Superflower Leadex range have bright white led's where the cables plug in that can't be turned off.

As for the 980 not being good value for money, the cheapest 980ti is a extra £140. Over £500 for a gpu is obscene, in fact anything over £400 is obscene to me. He could pick one up in the MM though for a very good price.
