hello, I need a PSU to power an old rig im using as a media center. Its running 1 dvd burner, 1 ide hdd, a P4 prescott 2.8, 2gb ddr, SB live 5.1, AGP 7950gt and 2 silent 120mm fans.

Im mainly wondering if i could get away with a decent branded 400w psu rather than a 500w psu as im trying to save as much money as possible...and i already bought a psu but its stupidly noisey :(

nvm, found this online.
Minimum powersupply requirements:

400W with +12 Volt rail current rating of 18 Amp Amps.

Considering thats probably for a suck PSU as opposed to corsair, it should be fine.

Let me know if you thinhk otherwise.

why not something such as this?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

seeing as cost is an issue for this machine (its my spare spare pc so i dont like spending money on it lol).

DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +5Vsb
MAX CURRENT 20A 20A 30A 0.8A 2.5A
MAX COMBINED WATTAGE 130W 360W 9.6W 12.5W

so shold be enough. £70 is definatley far too much, im looking in the £40 range atm and am thinking either the above corsair or one of the ocz ones.

I'd be astonished if it doesn't work. As long as the 7950gt doesn't draw insane currents it'll be fine, and I wouldn't expect it to. Quite an old system, and the 400W psu selected has got to be about the best 400W one available.

I'd expect you to be fine with a 20 quid one to be honest, but saving money on psu's can end badly. Could you swap out the fan on the existing, noisy one?
