Hi,

I am after a new TV for my bedroom. Currently I am using my parents old 23" Samsung 720p TV back from 2005. I use my tv for hd content from my htpc, plus I run an xbox 360 through it.

Currently I don't have hdmi's which means there are so many cables back there, so I really could do with a tv with 3 hdmi or more. Though feature wise I am not fussed what it has, I suppose inbuilt freeview is all I would want so I can remove another box from my tv. The speaker quality is unimportant as I run all my audio through an amp too.

Lastly what sort of size is suggested for a viewing distance of ~2.6m (8.5ft). I would be looking to spend ~£350, and I am eyeing up manufacturer refurbished models to keep the costs down.

32" is smaller than I was looking at. I had been looking at 37-40" if I'm honest. What makes you suggest a 32"?

get the biggest tv you can.... because a big tv = Awesome :D

save a bit more money and get a 42'' Panny or an LG, make sure it has 1080p

We have last years G20 Panny and it's amazing the P.Q is brilliant even on SD.....A 50'' may be too big for that range or maybe not, i sit 9ft away from a 55'' screen.

The Screen size to achieve THX recommended viewing angle is 76.1" diagonal. So literally as big as you can afford.

42" will be fine, though don't worry too much about 1080p if you are trying to keep the costs down, from that distance it won't make a difference even if you had better than perfect vision.

I have a 40" and view at roughly 6 to 7 feet, depending on if I'm at my computer and swivelling on my chair or sitting on my Fatsac. It's about right since it doesn't overly dominate the room (which is about 11x12 feet) and poor quality SD transmissions are just about bearable, although this is slowly becoming less of an issue. HD transmissions are ideal, and Blu Rays are the icing on the cake since I can afford to sit a little closer.

I'm not sure what discount you can get with refurbished models, but I'd go for picture quality over extra features first and foremost. Most TVs have plenty of HDMI inputs these days so you should be alright there, although maybe not with build in Freeview, although I haven't looked lately since I'm happy with my LE40B650 for bedroom use and will only upgrade when I have a bigger room (50" plasma thanks!).

I have the samsung c650 40" , got it a couple of months ago , very pleased with it , picture quality is great plus it has built in freeview HD!

I got mine just when the C650 was coming out, as they were discounted/on clearance. Probably the best picture quality, at least once calibrated, you're going to get on an CCFL LCD. Blacks are still a bit grey at night as are all LCDs, but dimming the backlight and using some bias-lighting fixes it well enough.

Thanks for the replies, I will be mainly looking at the 40-42" then to see what I can get for the money. Annoyingly it seems some tv's were cheaper a month or so ago.

muzzler, Yes I have been!

Definitely 42", 50" would be better but won't get a decent one for the budget. FWIW I picked up an LG 42LD490 about 6 weeks ago for £350, so there's decent sets to be had.
