I'm a complete Linux noob and i've only just started my journey into Ubuntu,
following on from the success of the useful freeware utilities windows thread i'm wondering what other people have installed on their systems?

Maybe we should create a useful software thread and get it sticky for noobs like myself?

ps..Now i've installed Linux, you'll never get rid of me :)

Very broad question :p

Amarok - music
Firefox - browsing
Pidgin - MSN
XChat - IRC

rtorrent - torrent client
hellanzb - nzb client
Keepass - password manager
VMWare Workstation - virtual machines

Theres countless other little apps out there that can do everything you will ever need :)

OpenTTD (retro gaming!)
nmap, mtr & wireshark - All useful utilities for network troubleshooting.
Various perl libraries & bits and bobs.
vim (instead of vim-tiny)

Arty sort of stuff... Artrage and PsCS2 through WINE <--- Daughter.... Although I also use Gimp.

VirtualBox For stuff you just cant get going and want !!

Really... Your interests will be different to everyone elses.

You'll spend your first few weeks (and the rest of your life) googling for this info.

Best thing to do is ask how to do something, or ask specific questions.

"How do I share my files"
"How do I play MP3's"
"What's the best music player"

Etc.

Amarok makes me want to die so I use xmms or fooabr2000 through wine :o
Apart from that I mainly use console programs like rtorrent and irssi, Firefox for web browsing :)

If you need a Winamp replacement. Try Audacious.

It's in the Ubuntu Repo already.
System -> Admistration -> Synaptic Package Manager, search for Audacious.

Once installed it's on the apps menu under Sound & Video.
For shoutcast radio stuff, just click the stream link and when the 'open .pls' window pops up browse to the executable at /usr/bin/audacious.
