Right just had a phone call from my granddad saying that he had a scan phone call claiming to be somebody from Microsoft XP and they had noticed a virus on his computer needed a few details from him so they could "help" him, and he almost fell for it, not sure how much info he gave away, but my nan overheard the conversation and slammed the phone down for him, a few weeks later i get another phone call saying that his computer is acting up and being when trying to get online he invaded with adverts and pop ups and it crashes a lot, my first reaction is that this scam phone call has enough details on him to start infesting his computer with a virus, and i have said i will go up there, to try to sort it out. Just sorting out what programs im going to need, i obviously got the Microsoft security essentials, but can't really thing of any other programs im going to need, is there any other essentials programs im going to need to tackle this

Malwarebytes to start with, then if all else fails, download ComboFix from the bleepingcomputer website.

Run CCleaner, then Malwarebytes and then if you still have a problem run ComboFix.
I personally use MSE and i install it on every PC. Never had any problems with it.
