what software to playback MP4 files?

fresh XP install and I'm getting stumped by the most basic of things i used to take for granted

Windows doesn't recognise a podcast i just downloaded - any suggestion on what to run it on?

Quicktime and iTunes can also be used, all my video podcasts are in MP4 format. PSP's and iPods also playback this format without transcoding. Also an Xbox with XBMC installed will play it, mainly because it uses most of the same codecs bechind VLC.

thanks. so VCL seems to have smallest operating overhead (resource-wise)

would you recommend this as a default player for all media? the interface looks pretty basic, but certainly less like bloatware when compared to Windows Media Player
