We're having our first child in 10 weeks and as our family doesn't live in the same town we're looking to have webcam chats with them so they feel a part of the baby growing up and so the baby knows who they are as they grow up.

I've got a Microsoft Lifecam Cinema connected to the HTPC on the main TV in the lounge so just need suggestions on the best software to use. I can't see a need for anything other than a 1 to 1 although maybe birthdays and christmas may mean multiple participants.

Thoughts so far:

1) Skype
2) Google Video Chat
3) Facebook Chat
4) MSN
5) Google+

Has anyone got any experience or recommendations for such an application?

Skype has the best video quality, in my experience. I've tried a few different ones and I always end up coming back to Skype.

Skype is probably the best option, especially if you have a few relatives who may not be the most technically inclined since it has an easy to use interface.

Look forward to the many hours of 'I can see you, can you so me? No I still can't hear you so I'm going to shout louder to remedy that situation'.

Argh. My mum annoys me so much like that.

I keep telling her our microphone and their speakers are working perfectly fine and that she doesn't need to shout, and if they need to make you louder they can just increase the volume. She just doesn't listen.

VSee is extremely efficient on network resource. To this end it is by default relatively conservative with picture quality while running under 'Automatic quality control'. You can, however, make manual adjustments using the < and > keys, something which was disclosed by a staff member on their now defunct forum, and watch your bandwidth use correspondingly jump.

Cheers for the replies guys.

I guess as we've all got facebook I will try that one first as it won't require any additional software or accounts to be setup. Will switch to skype if need be though as I have had plenty of good things about it!
