Coming back from the pub just now (no I havent been drinking before anyone says :p ) I took a right hander to fast, my own fault no oil or rabbit jumping out in the road or anything and hit the kerb pretty hard (about 20mph I would say) car rode up the kerb onto the bank, I reversed out a pulled over and the alloy is pretty badly kerbed as expected but its to dark to look for any other damage now I drove it back home (about 1.5 miles) at about 60mph and it seemed fine no wobbling or excessive vibrating or anything, what damage is this likely to have caused to my car ? (rover 220 btw)
Cheers :)
Rich

Sounds like you got off pretty lightly, friend of mine did that in a VW Scirocco, bent the steering rack, front wishbone, one of the alloys was crushed flat on one side (not enough that the tire burst/leaked), but it bounced as he drove off, with steering wheel pointing 90 degrees left while going straight!

I'd have thought you would feel any major damage as you drove out, but make a very carefull check all over, in the daylight tomorrow.

Yea first thing tommorow morning ill get underneath and check it over, tbh I was quite suprised i seemed to get away without any real damage, I just hope this is actually the case :( teach me to go beyond my ability!

In the Focus I needed a new steering rack and alloy. Other than that check over the tyre very closely to make sure it is still ok.

I managed to wreck an old M reg Escort TD's suspension doing a similar thing, looked ok but, was'nt. :(

You may be lucky, get it checked out to be sure. :)

when i did this i straightend the car up before the hit, hoping not to damage steering/tracking... it worked great.

except for the broken steelie and 2 flats.

cant believe i didnt get pictures though... never seen steelies like it.

checked it over, nothing looks too bent wishbones and drop links are fine alloy isnt as badly kurbed as I orginally thought, driven about 30 miles on it and havent had any trouble at all, reckon its ok? (I could take it to the garage but at the moment its money i dont really have to spend :( )

At least get the tracking looked at otherwise it might cost you more in tyres in the long run.

Yea your probably right, Im only going to have the car for another few months anyway but ill look into it anyway
cheers for the advice everyone :P

Just wondering guys, how much does it cost to get tracking done? I know it varies depending on equipment used, but could anyone give estimates?

Think I was quoted somewhere between £20 and £30 but that was probably OTT. I only took it to that place because you could watch the alignment being done via a computer screen in the waiting area :o

They came back and said it was fine though and that there was no charge which was a nice suprise.

I was quoted £20 last month, but they offered a free check, and it turned out my tracking was ok. i had it checked when i put new tyres on.

I mashed my Astra into a curb once and I was also doing about 20, the drive home was rather fun, had to have the wheel turned 90 degrees right to go striaght. Lucky I was only 5 minutes away.

Keep an eye on the tyre that hit the kerb as it's possible you may have damaged it. Any sign of bulges on the sidewalls and you need to get it replaced before it causes a blow-out.

I killed my firstest ever car doing that... C reg metro back in '95. It drove for a while, the wheel rotated anti clockwise when you let go of it and eventually it all just collapsed.

Lol.. rubbish cars are fun..
