What sort of freq / timings of 64gb will x79 cope with?

Title is a bit long but pretty much covers the whole question.

There are some very fast sets of ram out there these days. 2400MHz DDR3 is remarkable. I haven't had great fun going from three sticks to six on X58, so I'm a little pessimistic about putting eight sticks on a X79 board.

Buying 2400MHz ram then discovering the cpu can only drive it at 1600MHz would be... expensive. So asking the community is prudent. Assuming the limit is indeed the memory controller and not the ram, it'll vary a bit from processor to processor. Roughly what is the expected frequency / timings for eight, 8gb sticks?

Buying RAM is always a pain in the ass. Thank you for any guidance you can offer!

I would expect it to at least cope with 2133.

Buy it all, give 8 pack a shout, he loves memory tuning on x79, he'd surely manage to help you get the best of both worlds.

Depends on IMC strength. The only 2400 kit I have seen running as so in 64gb form are the GSKILL ones. Most you are lucky to get 2133mhz at best.

That's very useful guys, reminds me why I love this forum :)

@pgi or 8 pack, what timings do you have in mind? 2133MHz CAS11 is presumably more likely than CAS9.

@Monkey Puzzle & surveyor - it's for developing code that does lots of maths. Most of the computational work is solving enormous numbers of discretised differential equations. I'm endeavouring to write finite element code on the basis that writing it from scratch will give me a very clear idea of how the commercial software (fluent, nastran) behave under the hood. Plus I rather like coding.
