Hi,
Just got my old 360 replaced cos of the dreaded red lights. The new one I have sounds different. The DVD drive is actually noticeably quieter (It is the newer drive so to be expected). But, I think, the actual xbox itslef is noisier (The fans out the back etc).
At present I have it in the dashboard downloadnig something from Marketplace and it seems there is not a constant sound coming out of the back. every minute or 2 it sort of changes pitch, then changes back again.
Is it one of those fans that changes speed like on PCs? I think the noise is about the same as my old one,but the occassional change in pitch makes it seem louder. Dunno if GAME would take it back if I just say "it sounds funny". It is a brand new boxed one swapped for my December 05 one.
Just curious as to how loud and what sort of sound your console makes.
Its hard to compare as the old unit was returned, but I noticed the noise while I was playing some demos on the HDD so there was no DVD drive spinning to cover up the noise (as is the case in most games).
