Speccing a PC up for a friend and have sourced him an i7-3770 and one R9-290X 4GB graphics card.

Baring in mind he wont be overclocking anything, he wont be running crossfire and the system will only have one SSD in (no optical drive) what kind of PSU does he realistically need to power it sufficiently?

He was going to buy a case with a 500w PSU included but i'm not sure on the quality of them and have said it may be wise to look at buying a separate PSU rather than one that comes with the case. Or would the value cases that come with PSU's included be fine for the job? Does he need any special connectors from the PSU to connect up the R9-290X? It also doesn't particularly need to be modular either actually.

Anyone able to help? He doesn't want to spend the Earth, so something cheap and simple will do the trick.

500w is more than enough. i would avoid the cheap included PSU's and go for a more reputable brand. maybe look at EVGA hybrid modular, they seem like a good bang for buck or corsair. At least they both come with decent length warranties

The vast majority of these psu's that come with a case are fit for only one thing and that's chucking in the bin. A cheap case with a included psu is a extremely bad idea. There are some exceptions such as Silverstone and Antec who include decent psu's but the likes of Powercool, CiT, AVP and many others are to be avoided at all costs.

Either of these will do a fine job of powering that system:-
