What sort of train ticket do I need?

Initially I'll be on the Bedford-Brighton line, and then at some point in London I'll need to get a tube to North Greenwich. National rail doesn't have North Greenwich in its system so I have no idea what sort of ticket I'll need. I'll also need a return which has a high chance of me returning after midnight so a +1 day return.

Can anyone help me out, thanks.

Just get this!

If you are traveling past midnight that doesn't matter, for return tickets the next day starts at something like 4am. So the ticket bought on today would be valid till last train out of London, which on week days up to Bedford is something around 4am and down to Brighton is a little earlier.

Trains are pretty simple really.

So I get this right, the only peak time is in the morning before 9:30, there is no peak time at the end of the day until it starts again the next day at 4:30?
 
Peak time also happens coming out of London from 4pm-7pm, but peak only applies to national rail trains, not the underground. So getting an off peak travel card entitles you to go into London after 9.30am, travel around London in the zone areas at all times (provided you have the correct zones) and then leave London to your original destination (just not in peak hours of 4-7).

It's a couple of quid extra to leave in peak hours, pay the difference on the ticket to the guy at the ticket barrier if needs be, but if you plan your day its never usually worth it.
 
Sorry to chip in with a question of my own...
I'll be in london this weekend, traveling on the tube in zones 1 & 2.
I'm arriving at victoria coach station; can I buy a travel card there for the saturday and sunday tube traveling? (I know there's going to be some closures this weekend, so I'm not decided on what sort of alternate routs inside zones 1 & 2 I'll need to take as and when I get there)

Also does anyone know if you can use the travel card on south west trains - I'll need to get from clapham junction to wandsworth town at some point.

TFL website is quite good, but there's no obvious answer to the above that I can find for sure.

Ahh, ok, this makes sense now, I did wonder why there would only be one peak time otherwise one could assume people only ever went to Lonson, nobody ever comes back :p I won't be leaving until 23:30 earliest so this is no problem.

YES but only from a ticket office - get one from the main station and NOT the underground station.

If I was you I would get an Oyster Card and load a day's 1-2 travelcard on it with £5 of PAYG credit on it just in case... but seeing as you are going to buy the travelcard in advance...In my experience card Travelcards have worked - as long as you buy them from a mainline station and not the underground.

Thanks, I figured buying a travel card from a person at a ticket office would probably be the way to go. I'll ask about the mail line connection too. ;)
 
If the train journey includes tube travel, then that will be included in the ticket price. I went from Stafford to Brighton where I had to go underground from Euston to Victoria and that bit was included. Just scan your train ticket through the tube gates and you can pick it out from the other side of the machine after you walk through the metal spikes thing.
