As title.

I need something for (mainly) word processing college assignments and browsing the internet, I just don't have a clue what I can expect for this amount of cash.

I was considering a netbook, but I'm not so keen on the idea of typing 10,000 word assignments on something that cramped!

So maybe as a loose guideline, what can I expect for that kind of £££?

Cheers

Old P4 laptops should be in that range, and maybe some of the slower centrino systems.

Don't count on the batteries to last long or be working. :)

Cheers.

There's a Dell D410 in the member's market that I've got my eye on at the moment. It's pretty much at the top end of my budget, but it does sound like a good deal.

Well you definitely won't find better for that price, the D400 and D410 are usually quite cheap anyway because of the lack of optical drive, but that one's a very good spec, much better than you would find for the same money on the auction site :)

Another plus for the D410 is that it uses DDR2 memory, so upgrading it to 1gb will cost very little, and 2gb around £15. Most other laptops you'll find in the <£150 range will all be using DDR1, which costs a lot more.

Why not get a netbook and a fullsize usb keyboard for when you've got something big to type?
netbooks are what you want for uni really, I'm finding even my 12" laptop is a bit big and heavy.
