Does anybody know how fast ADSL connection I am likely to get if the exchange is 3km away from the house? I know it will never get me any high speeds, but for now I am happy to get 512 (I'd hate to go back to modem), and then pray something happens that will improve on this later. This is for a house I am looking to buy....

Perhaps somebody who is 3km away from theirs can tell me? Also, is ADSL Max (or whatever it is called) better for long distances?

You wont know as it depends on the cable length rather than the distance as crow flys..

Also its not really the length rather the quality of the line

Best thing to do is ask a few doors either side and see if they have dsl and what speed they can get

3km is not a long way. 512's original cable length limit was around 5.5-6km.

I'm probably over 3km way from my exchange and I get 6Mb.

Great, thanks for that.. I'll have to wait and see then.. If it turns out to be the perfect house I guess I'll have to live with whatever broadband im given. :)

You could also use the testers provided by the isp's. Their usually off a fair bit but it will give you an indication.

i'm 1.80km from my nearest exchange but i only get a max of 3mb connection... god knows how long the cable is... or how bad quality it is.

best bet for long distances is Cable.... a nice piece of fibre running to your street.... unfortunatly the further away from the exchange you are to lower the speeds will be.

but if your line is also good quality and the snr is good then 3+km should be fine.
