What "starter" kit for 9 year old beginner?

I am not a photographer but one of the children (9 yo) has became very interested.

I have a basic point and click and know they would enjoy something a little more "hands on" with more control but I have no idea where to start. In a time where lots of kids think "Photography" involves an iPad, I want to nurture my childs interest and show them more of the art :)

I am looking for a camera, lens, case and printer. Regarding the printer, I would choose running costs above quality at this stage with still good quality if possible.

I am looking for something which will give them a challenge but not too overwhelming if that makes sense?

They are a respectful soul so no worrys about damages. They enjoy nature and wildlife if that makes any difference to the camera/lens required.

Also, any recommendations for a suitable book to go with or other resources for both me and them :p

The right kit is more important than the price but do not expect a £400 camera for a beginner, unless that is what is needed?

Many thanks.

Personally, and this is only my thoughts, I would stick with a general point and shoot camera first. See if they like it, can see a picture, like taking shots with it.

My 8 year old asked for a camera for his birthday next week, picked up a nice little Sony W220 for him to play with. 2nd hand cost me £75 (including a case and memory card) It's got wifi etc so he can share the pictures to my phone/his tablet etc to start with.

If he enjoys it and is still using it in a years time etc and is keen I would then consider upgrading it further.

Personally I would get a small good little camera, let them play with it and enjoy it rather than spending £200/£300 on something they may lose interest in a few months time.
