Hi all,

What steps do you take to speed up a slow performing PC?

I am talking about a coporate machines so without disabling services and changing AV software etc..

I usually do...

1. Remove Page File and reboot
2. Run CCleaner to remove temp files and old Registry files
3. Disable Programs that dont need to run at startup
4. Run Defrag
5. Re-create page file and reboot
6. Check Disk

7. Make sure latest drivers and updates are installed

What could I add to this?

What do you mean when you say "remove the page file"?

I remove the page file then perform the defrag as it free up more space for the cleanup. Its also helps recreating the page file if it has split across the drive.

When you remove the page file you should first set the size to 16mb, then reboot, then disable it. Disabling it doesn't actually get rid of it - it retains its last size.

Personally I'd save the defrag til last, as downloading and installing a bunch of drivers and windows updates may use the disk a fair bit.

Also I'd add setting windows classic theme and making sure all the fancy fade effects etc are disabled (not so much for the performance hit these days, just the unnecessary delays in menus appearing etc).

If a PC is running abnormally slow then process explorer to see what's going on. Also keeping the software (not just the OS) up to date has helped in a few cases. I had a problem with IE and Adobe Reader where opening a PDF in the browser window would cause it to hang for about 30 seconds - an Adobe update fixed that.

These days even the cheapest business PCs are pretty powerful so I find tweaking unnescessary.
