What storage do you use with your XBMC Setup?

I have Ubuntu server running on old PC hardware in the back bedroom. It's kitted out with 4.5TB of storage, but only 500GB free so will be buying an extra 2TB for it soon.

I use the server rather than a Nas box for flexibility really. Plus it worked out much cheaper. The case can easily hold 10 or more 3.5" HDDs, and on the software side it runs the awesome sab/sickbeard combo.

EDIT: I like the sound of having the XBMC database on the server. That would save all kinds of hassle when re-installing or trying out new xbmc versions. Got any links on setting that up?

I'd be carefull with that, upgrading versions of XBMC will update the DB, therefore if you go revert versions you'll still be broken.

The easiest would be two run two db's. Just before an update bacup your db!

I use an origina R3600 with 2x500GB 2.5" drives in sata+esata with archlinux running xbmc-git from AUR

Whilst NAS setups are nice and tidy, I leave my machine on 24/7 for sickbeard/sabnzbd/subsonic/ftp/fileserver duties, which a NAS simply can't provide.

Whilst you might not be able to have all of those on a 'manufactured' NAS, I'm pretty sure you could have all of those on a freenas box. Just need a board (mini-itx and atom/amd equivalent if power usage is an issue), boot drive (or usb/flash drive for embedded) and then connect as many drives as you can fit for storage.

I have all the above bar subsonic (mainly because I'd never heard of it and will now be investigating :p)

Currently I have XBMC Live running on a Revo 3700 connected to a 6TB WHS which is running on an upgraded Intel SS4200-EHW (most cost effective server/nas solution imo). The server also handles all my sabnzbd tasks, ps3media server for the bedroom and bespoke webcam home security solution :)

It all works really well.

I am hoping that XBMC will soon be able to work on the PS3 so I can do away with PS3 Media Server!

Ps. try out the android/iphone XBMC remote app, does away with needing any clunky remotes!
