Hey all,

I'm trying to find a student bank acc for september, just wondering which one you think is best? I've seen the Halifax student acc and it looks like it has the biggest 0% OD.

Any which have free railcards?

TIA :)

Shop around is certainly your best bet as they change daily.. You can get some brilliant offers with banks nowadays.

I had a Barclays Graduate account, had a £200, 0% interest free overdraft.

^ Rubbish!

Halifax - biggest free over draft. Starts at £1800, goes up £300 every year. Max it out and put it into one of their high-interest bank accounts.

Was it possibly £2,000? That would be pretty standard nowadays.

I've been banking with Abbey since I started uni, at the time they were offering £50 after you credited £500 which was easily enough done. I've just had no reason to change as the service is decent enough but there are probably better deals available now. Your student Freshers Fayre or whatever will probably have a few banks touting for business anyway. :)

I'm with Natwest, 5 year rail card came in handy over the years when I didn't have my car to get to and from Uni and home at weekends etc.
I'm on my max overdraft for 3rd year, £1600, I'm only about -£800 now but i've been living in my overdraft all through Uni.
With some clever budgeting (last loan installment in April, part time work and bonus + working for bro's company) I should have cleared all the overdraft and be well into the positive within a month, i'm going to reduce it down to £100 as I don't need it anymore.

Thanks for the replies, i'm looking to get it sorted at the moment as i'm doing my student loan app. With the interest free od's, how long are they interest free for? I don't want to have £xxx overdrawn and find out that stops as soon as I graduate.

They are interest free until the day you graduate. *However*, some banks such as NatWest and Halifax offer a Graduate bank account, with a similarly sized free overdraft for a year or two.

Excuse me for not wanting a large overdraft

Most have a payback plan.

e.g
2000 when graduated, then you have a year to get it down to £1400
year 2 under 800 etc.

Its only like £8 a month interest on on £2000 anyway (know someone who has one - halifax)

Avoid any which don't extended overdraft every year like barclays. You max it out in the first year, then get fined for the next two.

HSBC is by far the best. Especially as they usually let you extend the overdraft and then pay it back in the summer holiday.

I was with RBS at Uni. In my final year they let me put my OD up to £2500 because I had a job offer etc so I'd be able to pay it back. I get something silly like 4 years to reduce the OD over too since I graduated. That reminds me, I really need to remove it now!

I have HSBC (4th year now). Never had any problem with them, when I took it out they were offering a free rail card or £50. Dunno what they offer now though. Be careful about their policies when you finish the course though, how much time you have to pay money back etc/what interest they will charge etc.

try a game of 'eeenie meeenie maaaiinie mo' that should help you. I couldnt decide when I first went to uni so just got a student version of my account with the bank I was using at the time.

halifax...

got the acc, went in and said to the guy:

"can i get 1,500 overdraft"
he turn on the pc and said "you got the card"
gave it to him, 30 seconds later
"done" and "cheers"

think max is 2750 but i didnt want to ask for more because i thought id get ****load of questions.... i suppose why would he care?

Please star out any swearing
