I was thinking about a thick piece of glass as it should be respectably flat

any other ideas any of you could give me of a decent surface to get to work on

I used a lapping table last time, but sadly I don't have access to that lab anymore.

Will probably use glass next time, wander around a dodgy neighbourhood until I see a largish piece on the floor I imagine. Glass shelf from the fridge deserves a look though, if that's viable it's far better.

I used the glass from an unused picture frame. This thing must have cost a few quid from Ikea and worked great. So far I have lapped 2 heatsinks and a CPU on it - very nice, flat finish.

I used 400 wet and dry, If I were to do it again I would probably start with 200-250 - save some time. If you start at 800 you will literally be at it all day.
