What tablet would you go for?

Bit of an open question!

Depends on the following:
Preferred size
What are you going to use it for
What operating system would you prefer

OK, have given some thought to this

Probably about a 10.1 screen size,
for browsing web, with ability to use memory cards to store photographs, accounts, etc.,
OS - I suppose latest windows sytem or at least most reliable.

Thank you
Vikki

Currently have an old xp system on a laptop and its so slow ...so need something to replace my current laptop thought a tablet would be the way to go.

Thank you

iPad

My wifes laptop is dieing. I will be replacing that with an iPad. Its just straight forward and no messing. You can get a card reader for it. The previous gen ipad air have come down a lot in price.

I have had ipads and a few galaxy tabs.

I just got a nice mint condition used xperia z2 tablet and WOW.... its amazingly fast and lovely to use. I have not found anything to complain about with it at all... assuming you like android of course.

I wouldn't want a tablet as my only means of getting online and dealing with photos, to be honest.

Might be worth getting a budget laptop AND a £200 tablet.

What is the general opinion of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (or 4) 10.1 Inch WiFi Tablet - 16GB - will it replace my old laptop and be easy to use?

The tabs are ok but only dual core so not super quick... the tab S is the new quad core one and is stunning apparently.

I had a tab 3 8inch before the z2 and the increase in speed and fluidity is very noticable. With the z2 i can be downloading a big app, installing one and watching a hd film at the same time and not notice any slowdown.

If you are replacing a laptop with this then the best talbet to get would be a windows tablet and also look on a certain auction site for Dell venue 11 pro ( refurbished) about £200 for baytrail and £230 for i3 version which are bargain to be honest for the computing power and portability you are getting. Really nothing else in this price bracket if you can also stretch maybe a surface pro 3 but they are overpriced for my liking.

there is also a Microsoft surface pro 2 which are also good and go for around £300 ish second had but I prefer the larger screen of the dell venue 11 pro.

I would steer clear from android really, its too restrictive for general all task computer but very good if all you do is surf internet and read books + some funky apps and weird games.

I have 10.1 inch Linx Windows 8.1 tablet with Quad core Atom CPU, 2GB RAM, 32GB SSD for less than £159, it is an amazing very thin tablet last me over 7 hours battery after browsed web and the tablet has a USB 3.0 port and also has DC power port that allowed me to charge tablet with AC power adapter and transfer data from USB 3.0 port at same time which Dell Venue Pro 8 and 11 cannot do because it do not have DC port so it only used 1 USB 3.0 port for power charging. Very impressed with realtek wifi adapter performance much better than my Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop and other people with Dell Venue Pro 11's horrible Dell brand wifi adapter. The Windows 8.1 ISO is stored in 4GB hidden recovery partition so you can format C partition and install either Windows 10 or Android Lollipop on it. :D Or if you want to use pen on tablet then I suggest brand new Surface Pro 2 with 128GB SSD for £425 or about £350 for second hand.

Well you probably don't need Surface Pro 2 if you after a pen. I just browsed and found something really very interesting... Dagi Capacitive stylus with transparent circle screwed on tip of pen which is super sensitivity to pressure, it just worked like Surface Pro digitiser pen but worked on capacitive screen on ipad, iPhone, Android and Windows tablets as well as touchscreen laptops.

I ordered Dagi P702 Accurate Capacitive Stylus and have it delivery next week and will let you know how it perform. :)

The linx is a good tablet but the screen resolution sucks for that 10" screen size for 7-8" its fine though but With the £50 cash back offer if you trade in your old tablet that is not a bad deal. But yeah the linx is good a budget tablet after the ipad and venue pro 11.

The dell venue 11 i3/i5 use the Intel® 7260AC Dual-Band 2x2 802.11 ac WiFi adapter and I have had no problems with the dell wireless adapter many uses complain about. But the charging issue is easy to fix with a £5 active charging usb adapter, it lets you charge and also use USB devices if required.

If I'm not mistaken you also get office 365 personal thrown in too which with the cashback, makes it a hard deal to ignore. Those that have one does the tablet get counted as a PC in terms of the 365 personal or can you also install the included office on a proper PC?

Microsoft store says "1 PC or Mac plus 1 iPad or Window tablet" but as I understand the Linx has a desktop OS on it, I'm wondering if that makes it count as a PC.

For a tablet I can't recommend the Tab S enough, it's really good. However, sounds like you want a Surface or something as others have said as it would be better for more work-orientated things and in essence being a laptop

You are absolutely wrong! Venue 11 Pro 5000 Series used Atom CPU, £349 and £379 models have 1366x768 screen which is not noticed different than 1280x800 while more expensive £419 and £489 models both have 1920x1080 screen but I found 1280x800 native resolution good on Linx 10" but much better when increased DPI scale up to 125% from 100% made it very easy to read and ebook reader friendly. Linx 10" is amazing tablet, just got mini HDMI adapter delivered on Sat and tested connected it with a spare HDMI cable to my HDTV, very impressed with 1920x1080 output. :D I got 8 years old 7 inch Samsung Q1 tablet UMPC now up for sales on ebay, it was nice but very terrible slow tablet as snail with 800x480 native resolution, was easy to read. The 7 inch screen supported up to 1024x600 resolution but god it was impossible to read very tiny icons and fonts on 1024x600 I cannot read would really needed a magnify to read it on a very small 7 inch screen.

Wondered what is active charging usb adapter brand and model name that cost £5 worked with Dell Venue Pro 11? Been searched for these and found nothing but forums and videos of homebrew hacked cables with no guides posed fire risks. Prefer official products, found one called Q-Cable USB 2.0 Hub with 4 ports cost £18.16 imported from Singapore on ebay that worked with Dell Venue Pro 8 but none have USB 3.0 Hub. With Linx 10" tablet DC power port made it very easy to plug in USB 3.0 Hub to use devices while charging at same time.

Just noticed Dell now discontinued Dell Venue Pro 11 7000 series with i3 and i5 CPUs replaced all of it with 1 Core M 5Y10a CPU and used new Intel 7265 802.11 AC card. All Dell Venue Pro 11 5000 series models used Dell Wireless 1538 802.11n card, models with i3 CPU actually used Dell Wireless 1537 while i5 CPU based models used Intel 7260AC card is exactly the same one in my Dell Inspiron 17" 7000 series laptop but the performance was worsen with connections speed drops all the times between 4 bars and 1 bar with speed as low 14MB to high 26MB per sec but never saw maximum performance. The issue was still going on with no fix so far since I bought it 1 year ago, tried to changed drivers, followed guides from forums to changed settings, disabled power saving, maximum power etc. Intel 7260AC is terrible card cannot get faster than my ancient dad laptop I bought in 2006 17" Dell Inspiron 9400 with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card which still got strong 4 bars signal with 36MB per sec and never drop speed, I will change Intel 7260AC card to something better new model that has no issue in near future. My Linx tablet used Realtek RTL8723BS 802.11n which got strong 4 bars signal with 72MB per sec, matched the speed as my wired Ethernet with Virgin Media 50MB cable broadband with over 50MB per sec accorded to speedtest.net. :D

I have a Dell 11 pro running the quad core Atom 3770, 2gb RAM and 64gb storage, have fitted a 64gb mSD card and also have the keyboard dock with extra battery, it does a sterling job of surfing the web, media content playback.

The full size USB 3.0 socket it great and works with both my ext mobile 2TB HDD's and can charge as well as transfer data at the same time as it has a separate charging port.

It handles all 1080p content be it via the tube or via my ext HDD's, managed to snag this as a refurb from Dell for just over 200 notes.

Infact typing this reply on it.

It is a sturdy bit of kit, the 1080p display is fantastic, clear, crisp and bright. An ideal companion on trips and for general use around the house etc.
