What temp should I set the heating to for an unoccupied house over this winter?

Trust me you don't want
To feel minus 20
Neither do I ever again
I moved South for a reason :D
If the house is well insulated
And depends where you are
And what the average
Winter temperature gets
Down to then sure it might be
Fine to leave it off
But plenty places further south
Than Scotland in the uk
Don't insulate indoors copper pipes
That brings back old memories of
Crawling under floorboards
And wrapping that nasty denso
Tape around pipes lol
Sorry I digress
What's the cost of low heating
The place
Compared to possible cost
And damage from a burst pipe?
Assuming we actually get a
Really cold spell

I don’t think we will. Temperatures haven’t been bad considering it’s February.

We had snow last year in middle Jan and Same for year before.

Hasn’t happened this year yet.
Not really no it hasn't
Depends where you are of course
It can vary a fair bit
This little corner of uk
Didn't barely get touched
Even by the beast from the east
In fact in over 20 years
Living here I have seen "proper"
Snow maybe 3 times
Got its own mini climate here I guess
Yet go up the m20 near detling
Area its another matter
Usually

If the house is going to be empty turn the water off and drain the system. As long as there are drain points it’s easy as is refilling the system again. If you don’t want to do that 5c will be fine. Don’t risk leaving it filled and heating off. If there is a temp drop and you get a burst pipe with mains pressure, like say a feed to a water tank in the loft it can destroy everything in a very short space of time. I’ve had to clear up unoccupied houses for clients where this has happened. This bills run into 10s of thousands to repair and can take weeks to just dry the properly out again.

In the end I forgot to turn it on before I left :o popping back in a week or so, should be chillin

Thanks all for the advice :)

Do what my dad did. Leave it off during a cold snap, have a pipe freeze and the ceiling come down. Super economical.

7-10C is where I'd leave it. 15C if only on holiday for a week or so.

Depends on location and house construction but really the anti-frost setting should suffice.

For context, 80s built house in Essex, our boiler packed up about 2 weeks ago and so we were without heating for a few days. Even before we got some plugin heaters the house never went below 16C!

Damn, I could happily live in a house that was 16c without heating.

~1860s stone house here. If I don't turn the heating on downstairs drops to 4-5c, colder than outdoors! And yes I have double-glazing and loft insulation etc. Very annoying.
