What Temp should my P4 3 ghz be running at?

Hi,

my Dad has a P4 3.0 Ghz processor. I recently installed everest onto his pc and it is showing the temps at 56c idle and then at 71c when the computer is run at 50% CPU utilization for about 20 mins.

There is some video camera DVR surveillance software on the pc, and when thats on its constantly at 50% cpu utilization. Thats how i have got the figures.

I checked on the intel website and from what i can see 70c is the max temp rated for this processor. Is that correct?? Because i just dont think it should be running at over max rated temps given that its onyl at 50% cpu and not overclocked or anything!

I am using some software called everest ultimate 2006 to get my information.

The processor is a Intel Pentium 4 3000 Mhz Prescott.

On idle with stock cooler and 2 x 8cm case fans rated at 27 cfm one intake one exhaust.

temps were 57c on idle, 71c on 50% load constant for 10 min.


Now i have gone out and bought a huge sythe ninja rev b, with the included 12cm fan.

I have the fan positioned so that it clows through the heatsink and directly at the fans that exhaust the warm air.

Ive also bought 2 addtional 22 cfm 8cm fans. Now the computer has a super huge heatsink, 12cm fan on heatsink, 2 x 8cm fans exhausting and 2 x 8cm fans on the intake.......its gone hotter!!!!!!!

I just dont understand!

with the added upgrades.

CPU on idle 59c.
50% load 72c

10 min cpu stability test (everest) 82c - 100% cpu
30 min cpu stability test (everest) 86c - 100% cpu, but around 50% cpu throttling.


Any ideas how i can get the cpu's temps down??

When playing tomb raider it gets hot, and slows down... probably because the cpu is throttling.

I did want to overclock it but i dont think theres much chance of that!
