Half an hour ago i was surfing the net minding my own business + having a beer and suddenly i get a warning from avast telling me it is unable to update, i thought nothing of it and decided to try it manually but no luck.
I start to get a bit suspicious so i checked my firewall was OK, anti malware + spyware was up to date and disconnected from the internet.
I then ran a full system scan and about 2 seconds from starting it i get about 3 warnings from avast telling me that Trojan+malware had been blocked.
I then ran scans on my anti malware and spyware.
My avast scan found 213 viruses including Trojans, my malware and spy ware also found few dozen infected files.
I ran a boot scan to find 4000 more infected files!
I'm not a total noob and i like to check/update and scan everyday/other day for viruses ect so i am a little confused as to how this could have happened, i mean i haven't been on any dodgey sites or downloaded anything at all recently so i'm rattling my brain trying to figure out where i have gone wrong.
Currently scanning again to find anything else :(

This happened to me the other night. I was on BBC News when all of a sudden those fake anti-virus programs popped up pretending to scan my PC. Wouldn't let me open anything or close it down.

I found Spybot good for finding errors that other programs didn't. Microsoft Security Essentials is also another I find good, as is Advanced System Care.

yea i managed to update after the boot scan and didn't find anything else, also my windows updates were all up to date.Really weird.

t'was a bug in the last update. I thought it was a bit weird that google.com was throwing up virus alerts until i found a thread on some random message board started today about the same problems......that wasnt before i wasted 2 hours scanning my c: drive though :p

Lack of windows updates by chance. Should have really stuck this in Software.

Yea sorry i was going to post in there originally god knows why i ended up starting thread in general discussion.

I use the windows firewall, avast-anti virus, malwarebytes, spyware blaster, and super anti spyware.

I used to like zone alarm as my firewall but i heard from friends that the windows 7 one was really decent.

Same, had a right fun job trying to get rid of it as it wouldn't let me run any anti-virus/anti-malware programme. Out of the blue my browser shut-down and the fake scanner started running. I'm wondering if it got in through temporary internet files or something.

I ended up booting into Safe-Mode and doing a System Restore from there as it didn't seem to affect the restore there. Once I'd restored, I set about updating all definitions and then ran scans.

Spybot Teatimer is fantastic at moments like these.

Haha, yeah same happened to me, a few weeks ago. It was pretending to be windows security center though and wouldn't let me open the real security center.

Looked in Task manager for anything dodgy and saw Steam.exe was running, even though I hadn't used Steam that day. So closed that and then ran a virus scan and all was good.

Surprised that Avast let that through. First time i'd had any trouble with a virus/spyware for a long time.

The virus's .exe is variable. I ended up just looking for what was using CPU memory at the time, finding it that way.
