What the heck is going on with my temps?

I made a thread recently about my temps. I have an H80i and the temps seemed pretty high (40 on idle), but I didn't have any case fans so I figured it must be that. However, I just got my new case fans and installed them, and a quick run of Prime 95 puts the temps over 100c immediately.

I'm not overclocked at all!

My case is the Carbide Air 540, with 3 fans on intake. My case feels pretty cold with all the fans on max, yet my idle temps are still 40 degrees.

Running a 4770k, stock at 1.088v-1.110v

Any idea what's going on?

Check the backplate, have you definitely oriented it so that the side with the indentation for the metal socket backplate bolts is at the top? Otherwise that may be causing the insufficient contact.

Spot on lads, the contact was poor. Just took it off and only half the thermal paste had even touched the CPU!

Temps seem to be better now. It goes to 75 in Prime 95 now.

All I need to figure out now is why my new case fans sound like ****ing mini tractors. It's not the blades, seems to be the motor in them.

My guess is you are using 120mm fans and they're going full whack. Part of the noise might be the airflow going through the grill as well. You'd need a fan speed reduction of some sorts to control the noise.
