what the hell happened

ok so last night my pc was fine, was browsing intenet when updates popped up saying few updates ready like security updates and malicous removal tool.
fell asleep watching movie on pc when this morning i wake up go to pc and move mouse only to discover that windows had gone haywire.

first of i noticed back ground was back to vista pic, then icons were showing where i didnt have any at all, rocket dock was gone but so many things just like gone totally from pc, programs, settings, icons all sorts, even as far as all my favs in explorer are gone.

how the hell has this happened? have i been attacked by virus even though ive scanned and nothing comes up.
 
i dont have or use system restore !!
if anything its like its done a saystem restore but left behind all the old programs.
this is completly random and im guesssing im gonna have to do full install.
annoying thing is i was just getting round to using acronis, only few days ago i posted about it !!
 
Will you leave System Restore on after you've finished reinstalling?
I don't know why people turn that feature off - it just has to "save your bacon" once to be worth while.
 
ok now im totally confused, i switch on the pc this evening after work and everything is back to nomal !!
now time to do a FULL virus scan and if everything is ok i will acronis disk image.

i dont see the huge hoo haa about re-installing windows! i have it turned of and have never had to use it for years,

though i do keep a huge backup of all drivers and program installers just in case
