Ok, noticed this happening a fair bit recently..

Desktop/windows etc is fine... not had chance to test a game but my spider senses tell me that will be fine too...

Just for the record, this has been happening since I swapped to a shuttle but whilst I've had the shuttle I have had a 7800gtx and now an x1900xt and they've both done the same thing. Also a fresh windows install, still the same..

2 examples.. one from the forum and one from bbc news

the weird thing is with both of these the garble is exactly the same every time ever after a restart??

wtf is going on?

my internet connection seems to be a bit unstable atm, could it be that?? or is it something with cached pics perhaps??

Any help gratefully received.

right, this is weird..

downloaded opera and firefox, both twice, neither worked.. zip error and unknown error and another crazy error..

managed to get firefox downloaded and it works fine??

so is it IE thats corrupt? would that explain it not downloading firefox and opera right?

any solutions?

obviously "use firefox" springs to mind but I'm comfortable with IE.. I guess I can't remove it.. can I repair it? or does that involve a full install again?

I just cleared all offline content and they're fine again...

bah

bloody software.. why can't you stick a pipe and some water in it? I understand that bit :p

PS congrats on the 1000 posts :p

sure its not dodgy ram? If it happens on fresh installs. Try downloading other stuff and see if its corrupted. Also if youve got other ram try that. Or memtest your current stuff.

hmm.. downloaded a couple of files through firefox and IE and both corrupted..

surely not ram??

right, just downloaded memtest v3.1 (on my laptop because it wouldn't download on the desktop) and its now running... am I right in thinking its test 5 I need to be running?

i have no idea which test is best. I personally run them all through. Errors are usually picked up pretty quick if there are any.

If you still have a dfi mobo you can run it from the bios - thus no bootable cd ;)

No dfi now.. onto a shuttle  its on pass 10 of test 5 with no errors.. My gut instinct is its not RAM.. I think its most likely software.

Are you running the Nforce4 Firewall??

I have some crc disk corruption when I was running that.

I do run the nf4 firewall actually

If this is the same RAM im buying from you in the members market, you better run it through memtest86+ ALL tests at least 10 times to be sure, cuz I will not be a happy chappie if it turns up with this problem in tow.

I fully understand.. its on test 7 now.. no probs at all..

This problem is NOT the ram I'm happy to guarantee that.. never had any problems with it, I'm gonna keep it testing for a couple of hours but I'm certain its not this.

If it was the ram why would clearing all my offline content meant the pics that were garbled were fine but others were garbled.. just doesn't point at the ram for me.

I don't have a maxtor disk, its a seagate and I'm using the nf4 ide controller I believe..

And yes, I have had a 7800gtx and now x1900xt in the space of the last few weeks.. I'm stumped tbh..

iirc its all based around this shuttle.. maybe I should try a bios flash and fresh install..

Maybe I should do what I've been half thinking about for ages and buy a mac mini and an xbox 360 :p

could it be the cpu? surely they work or don't work?? Its just it had a bit of a kicking under my mach2 when I had it.

How about a dodgy bit of software? I use some p2p stuff, could I have contracted a nasty from there? surely that would minifest itself in more unpleasant ways?

This memtest is still trucking along perfectly happily.. its not the ram chaps.

I don't actually.. just have a borked dfi expert (reason for getting the shuttle.. to avoid all this nonsense) I think when I get this presentation finished (in about 10 hours  ) I'll set about another fresh install.

If I upgraded it from home to pro would that reinstall everything? Might be worth a try before I kill it altogether.

Sounds like its the Nvidia Active Armour muck thats doing there is a known problem with it causing CRC errors.

When I first installed it, every zip i downloaded from the net was corrupt, the odd time they would work, but most times they were DOA.

Read the net a litte and found the issue, sadly I do recall that a full windows reinstall was required to remove it.

When you reinstall the NForce4 drivers dont install the firewall.

hmm.. that does chime with a few other issues I'm having here such as my connection speed being very erratic, sometimes my homepage (bbc news) won't load, then you refresh, refresh, refresh nothing.. open a new browser window and it zips straight on... I'm no wizard with this sort of thing but when I've got my technically inferior laptop (1.1ghz ULV centrino) jammed full of work firewalls and settings running rings round my pc on the net I guess something is going on.

So I reinstall (no major prob with that) and install the nv drivers and just give the firewall a miss?

Do we think that will need a full install or ust remove the nv chipset drivers, driver cleaner it and then reinstall without the firewall?

I guess the obvious answer is try it...

crikey..

fresh install sans firewall and all seems well and a damn sight faster too... weill report back if any changes but for the moment.. a big

THANK YOU!

I'd never have figured that out and I would have kept installing it with the chipset drivers and become convinced something was borked.
