What the Max Res can a MBP Do on external monitor

As title really as I am now too sure if it just the same as the res the mbp screen takes is it just the same for the external

Thanks was hoping it display more on the external than it does on the MBP and can it still be mirrored? You know when I can work on this MBP screen for emails and net and drag aperture over to the External to do all photo editing
