Just replacng the below spec in my sig with a BioStar M/B and Q6600

Just finshing of the build and powered up when i noticed a smell of burning coming from the DVD Burner and smoke comming from the DVD power socket, so switched off and when I tried it again it was dead.

No probs I thought just a faulty DVD unit so I put another one in and the same thing happend so I have fried two DVD writers both LG. ??:(

The Power Unit is one I retained and used in ny DFI board, check the power output from the unit with a multimeter and its 5.2v..??

Yours trulley ++++ off on friday 13th can any one advise me.

TIA

Paul

well the fact it happened with two DVD writers, would suggest that the DVD writers were not the problem.
PSU or Motherboard are most likely to be at fault

Board is new from OC can't see that being the issue, anyway the power comes directly from the PSU not via the board and when tested that rail is showing 5v. That's what I don't understand ?

Rail / MB ??

just because its new doesnt mean its not the problem

But how can it be the problem the motherboardas far as I am aware the power is drawn striaght from the rail ?

Just tested the 12v Rail from the PSU and this is at 12.3v still confused

Anyone??

You're using a streader PSU? I assume it's a cheapo unit. If it is, I would definitely think that's the suspect.

No mate not cheap state of the art, modular the lot DuAL pci.. Hence the reason I dodn't want to replace it.

Have just taken del of a new psu for my son I'll swap it out but the one I bought him is a cheap one. Still confused on the rails...

State of the art? I've googled it, and can't find anything about it.

How much did you pay for it?

Confused??

At the time over £100 it was one of the first PSU to have modular cables and 2 x PCI-e. It won loads of awards. Model number SST-ST60F.

Replaced it with a £35 750 PSU nasty but no smell of burning, still confused as the rails are reporting the correct voltage on the old PSU.

Unsure wherever to try this back into my DFI board with a std player and see what happens?? What do you reckon ??

I think you mean SilverStone, not 'Streader'?

Sorted....

sorry yes my dodgey spelling.:D

Well I proved it I put the PSU back into the old PC and put in a old cd rom and it fried it...LMAO..even though the rail was still showing 12.2v.

So I have thrown the PSU in the bin can't understand it the only thing I did when I took the PC apart is clean it with compressed air and got rid of several years of dust.

Looks like I am on the market for a quite modular PSU any recommendations sub £100?

This sounds exactly like what happens if you try too hard and insert a molex comnnector the wrong way round. I managed it once reaching under a dark desk to connect a HDD.

That PSU appears to use molex connectors at the PSU end of the modular cables so it could have got swapped.
