What to buy to upgrade....

Hi all,

Been some time since I did a near on full revamp of my computer but feel its now time. I do a mixture of gaming, video editing and photo editing on my existing PC and its just starting to show its age.

So I'm in the market for a CPU (Like the idea of the Ryzen 9 for all the lovely cores and threads but am open to suggestions), motherboard, memory, CPU cooler and ideally a new case. My main want out of all of this is that its pretty quiet.

I've already goy a Besilent 750 watt PSU and recently upgraded my GPU to a 2070 so am happy enough with those.

I'm a little out of touch of the low level detail for the modern components so would anyone have any suggestions for me on what to get?

Yeah. Its been a good servant but it certainly due an upgrade!

I don't have a hard budget as such but if i could get a decent setup that's futureproofed a fair bit for around £750, I'd be happy. If it comes in over that, for the right setup i wouldn't be too bothered.
 
It's worth checking if the software you're using will actually make decent use of the extra cores, because if it doesn't you might be better off with a 5800X, or even a 5600X / 11th gen, than paying the extra for say.. a 5950X. There have been some good deals on the 5900X lately though.

The noise levels are going to be pretty dependent on the quality of the cooler, if you're going to max out a 5950X, you'll need a fair bit of overhead.
 
Premiere Pro is the main thing which can use 8 cores efficiently but i do multitask quite a bit too which would help with the addtional cores. For the sake of £100 i was thinking that would be well spent.
 
8 core 16 thread 5800x with 32gb memory will knock the stuffing out of the editing. Cpu cooler quality, virtually SILENT and motheboard with WiFi

Thanks for that. One thing I forgot to mention is that I use Plex Media Server on this Pc and stream a lot of 4k content so think a wired connection via my homeplugs would be the best bet there. Wit that in mind, is there a saving to be had with a quality motherboard without wifi?

Do motherboards have much performance gain on modern day CPUs? So if i went for a £90 board over a £200 board, what am i getting for the cash?

Budget boards will often have less features and ports but will also have less power phases and cooling. This means it could potentionally limit a cpu performance especially higher end cpu.

Middle ground is the best bet like the above boards only by budget if thats all you can afford.

Some cheaper motherboards are very good and capable of running high-end CPUs no problem, but if you're only paying £90 it takes more effort to pick a good one than £200.

£200 motherboards will usually be over-specced so that they can support very high-end CPUs, overclocking, have more expansion slots, connectivity (even stuff like thunderbolt). It's harder to pick a dud that will overheat when you're paying a lot, but there are a few.

A decent B550 (AMD) or B560 (Intel) is perfectly capable for most users running at stock speeds.
 
Ryzen 5800x
B550 mid tier board
32gb 3600mhz ram
1tb M.2 drive

then case and cooler if you need to upgrade.

4000D Airflow is a well priced case with plenty of space.
 
I'd go for a 5900X as the extra cores will add longevity and also it's a bit better for video editing / multitasking while offering better value for money in terms of price per core.
