Hi all,

I am an event photographer and I've been approached by two publications who want to use a selection of photographs taken at an event last weekend for their articles. Specifically the Herald Express (a Devon local paper - http://www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/) and Riding Diary magazine (http://www.riding-diary.co.uk).

As far as remuneration goes- do I set my own price per image, or do I just get their 'going rate'? Can I charge more if they want to use the images online?

What about the rights to the image, do I retain the rights?

Thanks in advance

Richard

You should retain the copyright, certainly. For pricing, depending on how large the paper is, you can't really expect much - anything from nothing to not very much in my experience (I've had images in a few really small papers and the darlington & stockton, which is a decent size). I would imaging that you'd be getting a fixed rate. I haven't the faintest about the mag, though.

Thanks guys.

I've just spoken to the guy at the paper, he said they wouldn't normally pay for a story like this, but would be more than pleased to give the appropriate credit - which I'm perfectly happy with.
