looking for some guidance as to what to charge, i spent an hour taking photo's of employee's and another hour processing them. These photo's are going to be used for our ID badges.

Was thinking around £200.00 ?

We use a local pro for our office shots. He normally charges £700 a day or £400 for half a day and, because we fit in with him and use him when he's between jobs (he does a lot of overseas work) he does the basic processing we need for free.

So £200 for a couple of hours seems bang on with that.

I'd have a hard time paying anybody £100 an hour but if that's what the going rate is and people are prepared to pay it then fill your boots.

The company is Hitachi, so they are not short of a bob or two, I am also one of the employee's if that makes any difference? ;)

...I made the badges for 5 of the schools I go to. Took the pics, printed and laminated them too. Didn't charge though :o

You can charge your company for carrying out company work? Seems a bit strange, given that you'll have already been paid for the 2 hours you were working. Photos for badges at my place are taken on a company purchased camera by pretty much anyone. The idea that you should get paid extra for this seems daft, even if you did use your own camera.

That's the troublesome bit, is that you are doing work which presumably is outside of your job description, but want to be paid for it.

If you are freelance, then I think it would be quite easy to invoice them for the work, however I'd imagine you are full time staff on a wage?

If that is the case and they do pay you extra, then I assume they will have HR make a one off change to your salary for the month. I once had something similar when I did video work for a company I was employed by doing something else a number of years ago, I was only on minimum wage at the time though.

As An Exception says though, I would have worked it all out beforehand, as they might turn around and not think your work is worthy of what you think it should be.

Why wouldn't he be able to send an invoice as a freelance photographer even if he was on the books with them?

Perhaps he took the photo's on his lunch break or made up the extra two hours overtime?

When I was working full time for a large global company who had an office based locally I did some printing work for them from the business I run on the side and they were happy to accept an invoice completely independent of my employment status with them.

Thanks for your input, I have been told by HR that i can invoice them for the work i have done, even though i, has been pointed out by others, i was getting paid to be there anyway.

My question is NOT why should i get paid, its how much to charge, but i think i can get away with £200.00, so that what i will charge :D

You were paid for being there yes... But I'm sure they saved money by using you instead of a normal photographer so even if they give you a bit of extra cash they've still saved money :)

Your not paying him £100 per hour. You are paying for his time, the investment in equipment, IT, storage, studio overheads, insurance (public liability and prof indemnity), travel, Employers NI, plus his expertise !

By the time you take all that away, you get to a much more modest 'hourly rate'.....

Well, he says he's doing 2 hours work for £200, I call that £100 an hour regardless of where his money is going. I'd be really surprised if he paid half those things you listed, could be wrong of course but I'm guessing here.

My expertise, my camera, my studio lights, my processing, and delivery of product to a high standard. + i had to bring all this to my place of work £200.00 is a bargain.

Thx all.
