My oven broke last week. I have a very busy week and i'm not very DIY so it could be a week before i actually fix it... even if it is as simple as a eplacement fuse  In the meantime... what could i cook? I can use the hobs still, but keep thinking of boring stuff i usually cook on the hob like stir fry... any ideas of what else i could cook to prevent myself from turning into a big fat stiry fry?! :p

You could do a stew on the hob just fry up some meat put in some stock and veg and let it simmer(if you have time).

omelettes, fresh fish, pasta, rice, boiled veg. List is endless really. Do you stock food or buy per day ?

Maybe invest in a slow cooker they are awesome value for money.

I think it's a shorter list of what you can't cook on a hob than what you can.

However, if all you can think of is a stir-fry, it may be your imagination and cooking ability that limits you more than your equipment.

My oven only gets used from roasts, jacket potatoes and frozen pizzas. Make some nice pasta dish or something.

:( oh... you have me sussed... I'm not very imaginative when it comes to cooking  ...but i am a little above microwave pizzas and chips :p

I like your response :) Going to hunt out a stew recipe... would be perfect for this cold weather too... thank you :) I don't stock buy... i tend to buy for one or a few days as i'm mostly only cooking for one so don't like things to go to waste... things i can freeze are great as having the same meal for three or so successive days can get a little dull

Make a list of what ingredients you tend to have in your cupboards at all times and those which you tend to favour buying when needed and I'm sure we can all come up with a selection of dishes for you to try your hand at.

Part and parcel of being a capable cook is keeping a selection of basic, yet flexible, ingredients to hand at all times, just waiting for the addition of that special extra ingredient.

I don't have a working oven for 3 years now and don't own a microwave.

You learn lots of food that can be cooked on the hob. The only thing I miss is making a roast. I do not miss not having ready meals.

I think i'll be joining you... and you seem to be surviving alright :) ...my oven is broken and i'm not going planning to buy a replacement anytime soon either... as i'm car hunting at the mo ;) :D
