Ok, so I've booked a trip to spend around 10 days in Taiwan this november. Now just need ideas about what to do/see! :p

Prefer seeing scenery and doing outdoorsy stuff rather than spending time in cities. I've heard kenting, taoroko gorge and lanyu are good. Want to check out some hot springs too. Taiwan's not a very common tourist destination but I'm sure some of you oc'ers must have been there so what should I visit? :)

Oh, and is it worth taking money to buy lots of cheap electronics? :p

Come to Tainan! We have a big tower, and stuff. And temples. Prefer it to Taipei anyway, really friendly down here.

I've not had enough time yet to explore the country yet, but you've listed basically the top destinations - if you want outdoors, I'd stick more to the east coast. The west is pretty densely populated and developed, which probably isn't what you're looking for. East is more cliff faces dropping on to beaches, gorges, springs and such.

Sorry, I should be able to be more helpful, but finding a job has kind of been my priority, so I haven't really been out of Tainan yet. Good on you for coming here anyway, you're right that most people overlook it, but I've loved the month I've been here so far :)

Edit/ re: Electronics, I wouldn't really bother - it's slightly cheaper, but as with the mainland, the lower demand for luxury items means the prices are pretty high. Economies of scale and suchlike. You'd save a bit, but it's not bargain prices.

Lol. You're really selling it. :p

Yeah, was definitely thinking of spending more time on the east coast. My friend has a taiwan driver's license so we should be able to travel around easily.

Shame about the electronics. :(

If you've got access to Usenet, check out the Lonely Planet Pilot Guide (Globe Trekker) to Hong Kong and Taiwan. It's pretty interesting.
