I have worked for The Tech Guys in a stand alone store for a little over 4 months now. There were 8 of these stores in the country as a trial to see if the market was there, it wasn't and they decided to close the stores down. Instead of making the staff redundant they have offererd us positions in either The Tech Guys in the purple shop or as a field engineer.
The purple shirt guys would bethe same money as I'm on now but there is a greater chance of progression up the chain where as the field engineers are £2000 more plus a car but thats it. The hours are slightly better out on the field too.

EDIT: yeah I misspelled the title, sorry.

I'd go with the money, the car and the shorter hours :)

Field work is more interesting too. *cough* bored housewives ;)

Being a field engineer means so much more freedom with how you dish your time out. You'll probably get a van or something, more dosh - I wouldn't mind betting that sometimes you may even be able to finish early sometimes :D

The field engineer is a better job no doubt but I'm thinking long term and its a pretty dead end job. I could stay there a year and sod off with my experiance and find a better job.

No job is dead end - unless you treat it like that.

A field engineer position will probably be viewed more favourably than a store position, by other IT service companies, should you want to move jobs later. Being in the field requires more personal professionalism (dressing smart, being friendly and polite, getting the job done quickly and getting invoices paid).
