well now im finally working again and the fact my plasma is nearly 10 years old and is getting blotchy now and again i guess its time to upgrade.

currently mulling over what to do, i know whatever i get it will be a step up over the 720p/1080i (yes its that bad) 42" hitachi plasma im on now. but tyring to work out whats best bang for my buck.

looking at dropping around £1k max, now had a look at a new sony the Sony KDL-55W829 which does everything id want. not really interested in 3d so its poor 3d performance isnt an issue, im more after a good picture than anything fancy.

as for projector choice i dont have a clue as nowhere local i could nip in to have a butchers really.

all im after in short is a solid 1080P picture for both movies and gaming.

let the conjecture commence !

and yes i wont be buying till closer to christmas and maybe not even till jan as i used to work at currys so will be pestering a friend there for any deals :D

I think you've answered your own question. (the Sony) ;)

Projectors are great though, i've owned a 720p projector for 9 years now, (I want a 1080p one at some point in the future) you have to factor in the cost of lamps with projectors if you plan on using it everyday.

I would highly recommend you wait till the price of OLED TV's drop to around your 1k budget...;)

The prices of them have been dropping really fast lately.....

£1000 is enough to buy a budget home cinema projector, but not enough to buy a projector + screen + bracket + cabling and and and.... So at TV is the most sensible choice.

I see a projector as something to have as well as a good TV when you want the next step up for movie watching. Otherwise you're having to go around and make the room as dark as possible to watch a half hour TV show.

well iv been through the waiting game enough times with pc parts :P il wait for oled's to drop then the projectors drop and so on :P

and basically its a toss up getting a good screen now and then a 4k projector in a couple of years when the prices drop and the techs better. as once i have em i see them lasting another 10 years like my current tv's done or till they fail. cant be bothered upgrading for the sake of having the newest model unless it actually is a upgrade in real terms.

yes you can and get great results. Might not be to your standards but that's not true.

I would agree get good TV first

The TV will always be more versatile, but it really depends in your viewing habits and room layout. If you only ever watch movies in the evenings then a projector will be amazing. If you're big into weekend sports a projector will still be amazing but you'll need to think more carefully about whether you want to watch in darkness or compromise on image quality - watching the match with mates is usually better in a room where you can see each other as well as the telly. For general rubbish on TV I would choose a flat screen TV over a projector every time. Room layout is really important, a TV is much more forgiving on positioning.

room layout im spoilt as its my own room and its a rectangle il be moving it all around in a couple of weeks so il have a flat wall to play with if i go the projector route, only possible issue would be a ceiling light fitting getting in the way depending on the throw from a projector.

viewing wise its in a dark room anyways so no worrys with light, but its film tv and of course gaming when i fancy something on the big scree.

il probbaly just get the sony 55 and then hold off a projector to when 4k ones are cheaper and better. whatever i get now i know will be a step up from the plasma i have as its 10 years old or there abouts now.

i can see the next month or two being fun while i mull over what to get lol

now looking at the new EPSON EH-TW6600 which was shown in germany last month.

fun fun fun :D

If you do no suffer from Rainbow effect get a DLP, esp for gaming as of good low lag in some models.

Any LCD after a good plasma will be a let down (not sure how good your model was TBH).

I would kill for a 60" last gen Kuro today but cannot get one anywhere nearby.

Go for the TV. A projector is great and I will always choose one for movie viewing, but they're not suited as a main display which is what it sounds like you're replacing. Also, to get the most out of one it's ideal to treat the room too - dark ceiling, walls, floor etc - which isn't always possible. You don't have to of course, but the picture will suffer if you don't. And while we're talking picture quality - a current TV with your budget will absolutely, massively, in every respect bar screen size, slay what the same money will get you with a pj. You're looking at least 3k+ if you want a projected image that comes close to the current crop of LED and plasma panels in terms of pq and considerably more if you want to be roughly on par.

Do you have any experience in fixed DIY screens with high-gain paint?
Yes. Screen Goo.

I used their High Contrast +20 for an installation. It was a loft, and there wasn't room for a conventional pull down or electric screen, and not even a fixed frame screen.

Screen Goo cost about £275, but it gave us a working screen surface on the wall where a normal screen wouldn't have gone. It also provided higher gain (approx 1.5) and some properties that helped with managing ambient light. An equivalent fixed frame screen with a high contrast surface would have cost quite a bit more, so as a solution the Screen Goo satisfied the design brief and the budget.

Getting the 50' Sony delivered today. While I don't know much about projectors I can say the 55" you are looking at looked rather nice in the stores.
If you have a Sony store near you they had a sale in the weekend which may still be on. I got £100 off the TV and £100 of a sound bar with sub.

If my small flat could have squeezed in surround sound I'd have done it. No space though, being a poor student and all.

one good thing still living at home, when you work you can buy the odd nice thing and also buy good so you dont have to buy two or three times. iv had the dts kit now 11 years. and its still going strong :)

wont upgrade that until i have my own place and even then it wont be high on my lists of things to get. for a £500 technics system is very nice. especially as it came packaged with a 8" eltax sub not some plastic thing like everything else at the time was coming with.
