What to do to the horrible mess :(

For a few months now I've been contemplating cutting a set of fresh holes into the innards of my Antec 300 for cable routing/tidying purposes, although I have no experience with this whatsoever.

An idea clicked a bit recently (no idea why I didn't think of it sooner), for me to use cable tidying kits or clips and extension cables to route the cables appropriately and out of the way. Is this a more sensible idea, and would it get the desired effect?

What do you guys think? Pictures below.

I have a feeling my cables are too short to hide away in a nice way in that area behind the motherboard plate or whatever it's called, or even in that nifty cable tidy... hole.

Hold on a sec, got the pictures, but managed to get dust all over my bed. I should pay attention to my dust filter more often. :/

PSU upgrade or cable extensions would be the first port of call.

Either change the IDE drive to SATA or get a round IDE cable.

That would make quite a difference! :)

get a bunch of zip ties, a SATA optical drive, and reroute fan cables down the side of the case, move whatever that thing is which is above the PSU to next to the graphics card, ziptie the slack cable on it... basically go crazy with zipties binding everything up neatly.

my god that looks horrible, and I thought mine was bad.
But mines all neat and tidy now, hidd all the cables in the dvd rom area and cliped them there.
And now they're all hidden and done with some lovely cable clips.

Look at the 'new cases gallery' in this forum. There are plenty of 300s in there with mods that improve cable management. I would suggest that. It's a very hard case to get good tidy management in without modding it. You'd need a lot of patience.

Thats a respectable effort for a messy case, good try!

Just group as many wires as you can together, if you tie them to the 24 pin connector and then on to where they plug in and leave and excess at the end, you should get one lump of wires leaving the PSU and then going off around the case.

To do it properly though you'll need a modular power supply with a good cable length. The fan's can be connected together and either ran down the side of the case at the back or across the top.

Do 4 pin extension cables exist? I can only find an 8pin extension cable on OcUK.

Also what's the easiest available thing to use to make holes in the sheet aluminium? Do I HAVE to get a dremel/rotary tool?

Get the 8 pin and use 4 pins, the male end is split into 2x4 pins.

Get a hole saw for cutting, easy.

Yeah I might go for the SATA now. I did do something ingenious though. (stupid really)

Here's how today's efforts went, turned PSU upside down, got a bunch of cable ties.

Please ignore the masking tape, I'm planning where the holes should go. :( (apart from where it is temporarily hold problem wires together)

I've also turned th PSU upside down, but now I'm getting some horrendous buzzing whirring noises. I'm not sure what it is exactly.

Hi
You could drop the dvd drive down to the next slot. Then hide the fan cables in the space above the dvd drive.Aslo get some sticky cable tie mounts and cable tie's to hold them in place.
