Here's the situation then people. My O2 contract on my iPhone 16gb 3G runs out tomorrow, thats always good news. I planned on going on the £20 per month rolling contract for however long it took for the new iPhone to be released (Hopefully end of 2nd quarter), but low and behold it's gone and got itself all broken.

My alarm got me up yesterday morning and the phone crashed. No bother I thought just give it a little restart. Bugger - straight into recovery mode. Fast forward to several and I mean SEVERAL restores later through both my mac and my PC and I am just going around in circles.

Went into the Genius Bar this morning and the car was very helpful but just couldn't find a solution to my problem and my warranty of course has run out.

So what is recommended that I do now. Options are staying with 02 who want £189 for a 3GS or move to Vodafone or Orange. What's peoples experiences and ideas.

Would it not be worth just getting a second hand handset for the time being and waiting for the next model? £15 a month saved (assuming you are on the £35 contract) and you will likely get 90% of your money back when you sell it on.

On a side note, are you interested in selling your broken handset? Am after one with a working screen to take apart and "experiment" with (email in trust if you want to message me).

Well I've just been on the phone to O2 for what seems like an age and they offered me a 8GB 3G for free on an 18month contract. And that to upgrade to a 3GS it would cost me £189.

Perhaps it might be worth getting a phone off the 'bay, using that till the summer and see what Apple announce for the next refresh.
Even the 2G iPhones have got a decent resale value, at least it doesn't tie you into 18 months when you know there's a new phone likely to be announced in the next 4-6 months.

I've borrowed a Nokia N85 from my friend and its horrible, can't believe how much I have gotten used to my iPhone.

dont get tied into another 18 months on the standard 3G! try and grab a bargain 3GS on the bay then sell when the new one comes out... over the period between now and then you should easily recoup the shortfall between the buy and sell price from the £20 simplicity tariff (£15 saving p/m) ;)
