What to do with a dead 780?

Evening all.

I have just confirmed one of my Lightnings has died, tried it in a friends z87 computer and it was showing the same issues... MSI AB not getting any info and horizontal white lines all over the display.

I have tried both BIOS' and even flashed the std BIOS using a copy from the good LTG... It's dead.

MSI wont cover it under warranty as I have neither the fan nor the back plate. It was bought as a bare card and priced accordingly ;)

What do people do with poorly hardware though? It could be a real simple fix for someone in the know... Also this leaves me in a sticky situation...

1 780 just isnt enough at 1440 and it's almost a little daft to buy another now with the 3Gb VRAM limit... I'm tempted to sell this one LTG I have and get xfire 290's or maybe a 980 in anticipation of 4k... Any advice?

Thoughts much appreciated :)

The bay, there's always someone out their with more money than ability that fancies their hand at fixing something.

Think you got that the wrong way around ;)

OP: stick it on the bay. You'd be surprised what people are willing to pay for.

No, I meant it like that. I know a number of people that think they can fix broken phones etc, buy a bunch hoping to fix them and make money. Instead they find out they can't and have just wasted their time and money.

The sensible thing to do would be to sell it and then decide whether you need the power of 2 780s for 1440p.

The not very sensible option would be to sell the working one, put the dead one on the wall and then get 2 970s or 290s etc.

Thanks for your suggestions :)

I'll put both of them on the bay and probably look for either a cheap 290 with a waterblock on the MM and wait for 980Ti's or something or buy a 970 now with a view to SLI in the near future.

The reason I can't slap the air cooler off the other one is two fold. I don't have the Reactor/backplate for the dead one which has the serial number on and also I'd rather keep the good one and all of it's bits as a whole so I can RMA it if required :)
