Dismantle them for the magnets

No need to be so destructive.

Fill it full to the brim with pron then format.
All anyone will recover is some pron.

That doesn't guarantee data can't be recovered for various reasons - though in this context unlikely someone is going to go to the lengths of forensic level data recovery.

I've had recovery tools able to find fragments of files though even after a drive has been subsequently filled with garbage data before.

I remember an old work colleague a long time ago smashing his computer up and throwing it into the skip, I said "what are you trying to do" he said " make sure no one can see any information from my PC" so I opened the mangled PC up and the hard drive was untouched lol.

Dismantle the HDD, recycle everything except the platters. Use them as decorative items around your house

I drill them if they are failing and take them to the tip and put them in the electronics bit
