I have to admit I was a little surprised by the excellent performance scaling we see on the R6950. Where the single card is a little so-so to position, we can surely recommend going the CrossfireX route. Granted, two cards will set you back a chunk load of money at roughly 550 EUR, but the performance gained here is truly amazing.

ATI's, or I should say AMDs driver team has done a tremendous job ever since the series 5000 release to get games supported in multi-GPU mode. Last week they announced that every week a new Application Profile Patch will be released, so if a new game is out, within a week you'll have support for it (at least according to AMD). It's that kind of dedication we like to see very much.

Says it all really, in terms of performance the 580 gets well beaten. For the money 6950 xfire gives incredible performance.

this is what worries me tho

there's was definitely an increase in the GPU temperature on the upper graphics card that lacks the most airflow, it normalized at 89/90 Degrees C which quite honestly is a lot

How about the Gainward 470 Gold sample SLI?

£400 for 2 470's with good non reference coolers, beats the 580 as well and it's cheaper.

1. 470 MSI Twin frozr II SLI are absolute gems. Sitting at 800mhz-1850mhz on air with 1.012 out of the box. Beats a stock 480sli/6970 xfire. BUT for 220£ that OCUK are charging cant recommend them really....

2. 6950 x-fire heat and noise is worrying like you said. Performance is encouraging. Something still is not quite right with these cards. and at 220£ they are 20£ too dear.

3. I would skip 580gtx personally, because you might get another dud card. :-(

Its a hard position to be in really is. I would wait a little bit after christmas because there are bound to be some great deals in 3-5 days time.

Boxing day sales. I think now is the worst time to buy. I bet websites on boxing day up to new year will be filled with "offers" on all hardware before the 20% VAT kick in...

no harm in waiting a week or so before vat increase, and i didnt think of that

This certainly an tempting option. They can be had for £189.98 with free mafia2 which will give you a -£10 if sold. SO 179.98 = £360 aint bad.

wink wink GJ02 ;-)
