Guys,

Could do with some advise please

Currently have a P4 3.0,850xt pe (AGP),Audigy 2 and 2gb Ram.

Looking to upgrate this rig but I am torn between getting a 939 socket
system with PCI-E,X-fi,Raptors and new Ram.

(Have already bought a New Case and PSU)

Or waiting to get AM2 Socket when it comes out.

Looking for this udgrade to last 18-24mths if possible.

My heart says buy now my brain says wait

Any thoughts would be helpful - just dont want to spend £500-600 to see
mobo,CPU and Ram all outdated very quickly.

Then i start thinking about DX10

well you can look at it this way the M2 is only giving support for ddr2 that is it. they will be playing with the processors so that still give roughly the same performace as the socket 939. also the 939 has lots of nice opterons kicking around for it.

Do you need new ram?
What is your current ram.

I would keep your AGP gfx card for now as it is quite good. I would look at getting a X2 3800+ or X2 4400+ and a Asrock 939 dual board as this board has both pci-e and agp slots, so you could keep your card and buy a DirectX 10 card when they are out.

The RAM I have currently is basic value stuff.

Was looking to get some better quality gear to go with the newer mobo.

The 850xtpe is okay but i cannot see it lasting another 18months or so was
looking to be buying a top end graphics card.

I would rather buy an all new set up and keep this one as a back up/ give to
my son - so dont want to steal to much off it (not when there is better
stuff kicking about).

The dilema is how much effect AM2 and DX10 will have over the next
18months if I buy a top-end 939 socket system now against waiting 6 / 9
months and getting an AM2 system then.
