Hey guys,

I bought a BFG nForce 680i SLI last week and it's been giving me nothing but trouble. Squealing capacitors, insane chipset temperatures, radical instability, you name it, so I've decided that I'm reluctantly going to send it back.

Now I'm trying to decide where to go next. The 680i chipset has way more features than I need (including SLI, I'll never need it) so I won't be going back to it, and easyrider strongly suggests I go for a cheaper 650i instead. I've just come from a Gigabyte DS3 though and this experience with the 680i chipset has left me bitter as hell with nForce 6, so I am thinking of going back to a 965P based board (even if it is dearer, I don't care at this point.)

So far I've narrowed down my choices to the following: -

Asus P5B-E Plus
Asus P5B Deluxe
Asus P5N-E SLi

I'm really leaning toward the P5B-E Plus because it's the same chipset as my old DS3 and I will feel much more at home with it, I also prefer the looks of the chipset heatsinks on that model as they look a lot easier to replace with an aftermarket solution should the need arise.

Should I just dive in and get the P5B-E Plus? Thanks in advance for advice.

Sincerely yours,
Ulfhedjinn.

Squealing capacitors? sounds awesome, do all 680i mobos have this defect or is it down to the quad core cpus.
It sounds anything but awesome, only time I can't hear it is when I have the chipset fan on because it's so deafeningly loud that I want to feed it to my next door neighbour's dog.

I doubt it's an issue with quad-core, I'm running an E6300. Not sure if it's a common problem but this mobo is really F.U.B.A.R. in the highest order and I am definitely not keeping it. :(

I've got a BFG mobo sat in it's box not opened it just yet not ready to do my build had it for 2 weeks. What's my chances of getting a similar issues as you in this case.

I have no idea mate, I've only seen one mention of squealing caps on here so I probably just got a duff board.

the 650sli is a good board ,might not get the problems the 680 gets ..

Ah mate i feel for you i hate having a new build to power it up and discover a heap of problems then the hassle of taken it all apart and sending it all back.

I've had the motherboard for 2 weeks not looking to build for another week or so hoping it will be perfect without any hassle. Will OcUK take this motherboard back after 30 days if a problem occurs? or is it a warranty job for BFG i don't live far from the BFG in bedwas, caerphilly.

I have had zero issues with my EVGA 680i.

It has been the best C2D mobo I have had.

Before I went through

DFI Infinity
Badaxe
Asus P5W DH
DS3
EVGA 680i

I think maybe its a bad one off mobo..

Going from a DS3 to a P5B is not really an upgrade IMO.

The DS3 got my vote from all the others I tried apart from the 680i

Had my 6600 rock solid at 3.8ghz

And you cant argue with that :p

I'm gradually going off mobo's that cost over 100 quid and come in near enough 200 quid.

It gives me a warm feeling getting nice clocks and faster speed from hardware that cost's 100's less.

A mobo that costs so much less can do the same job.

The new gigabyte 680i looks nice though but I mean who use quad gigabtye lan? FFS!

i,m not into retail ,but would say that they would, plus it might just be a random issue ,not a major problem ;)

If i have an issue i'll send it back to OcUK and get a BX2, touches wood! It's all just sat here in boxes waiting to be built.

Is it 12 month with the retailer (OcUK) or is it just 30 days with the retailer and it's then down to manufacture to replace? I always thought it's 12 months with the retailer from date of purchase.

I agree, I think it's definitely a one-off, but you said it yourself that we're beta testing the nForce6 chipset so I think I might feel more comfortable going back to a 965P chipset. :p

Aye, but I sold my DS3 for (IMO) a very good price and simply fancied a new board. I'm not really bothered about it being a real "upgrade" as only my memory and power supply were holding me back on that board, and they've also been replaced with far superior alternatives now.

Definitely miss my DS3, but I don't miss the ice cream colours. Going for all-black, so it's Asus at the moment. :p

It's definitely just a bad board, there's no way this is common as Nvidia offices would be stormed if all of them were as bad as mine and all the employees would be lined up and shot.

Ulfhedjinn you got me worried now! not even built mine yet. If i have an issue i'll send it back to OcUK and get a BX2, touches wood! It's all just sat here in boxes waiting to be built.

It might be worth getting an RMA just to see if it really is that one board playing up.

If you really want to go elsewhere, then it would be well worth it giving the 650i board a try.

Chill out, like I said it's probably a one-off bad board. Nvidia would be dead if this was common. :p

Since you own the BFG version then it's probably got to go back to BFG now. I should really be sending mine to BFG, it says so on the leaflets in the box, but since it's within 12 days of purchase and I want a complete refund it's going back under the distance selling act as faulty goods.

If it was after 12 days I'd probably have to send it back to BFG for a replacement and that's it.

Nah, this board has way more features than I need and I've been well put off by these problems, so I won't be using another 680i any time soon. Considering the 650i as it has a lot less features and a much more attractive price.

Get another DS3, it's perfectly decent board for the money.
Yeah I miss my DS3, I can't fault those lovely boards, but it's not black. :p

One reason I got shut of mine was the horrid blue/gold/green/red etc. blindman colour scheme.

My whole PC is black inside ATM, I want to keep it that way. :D

yup i think DS3 is the place to go for.....
but ;)
maybe little w8 till they will release ds3 rev.2 with 1333 support :)
