Well, the 480 is the quickest card there and the Gigabyte cooler will be as quiet as the 560 one.
It's pretty much down to if you want the horsepower and 580 speeds in exchange of higher power draw, in which case take the 480.

The 560 runs pretty much neck and neck with a 570/stock 480.

What games do you play and at what res??

If you can afford £200 plus, I would avoid the 6870. A good card, but you'll thank yourself for paying the extra if you're a guy who likes to hold on to gpu's for more than 6 months or a year.

Personally I'd take the 480 every time. I have the Asus one with the stock cooler at SOC speeds and it's incredibly quick. Although I'd be tempted to save a bit of cash and get the gigabyte SE, and overclock to SOC speeds manually.

I have circa £230 to spend on the card and want the best card available. Not fussed about power requirements. Game at 1080p and mainly like racing games such as Shift and Dirt.

The GTX 480 represents best value for money, the Gigabyte SOC is the fastest card you've linked to with performance close to GTX 580 territory!

Providing you have adequate airflow in your case coupled with a half decent PSU this would be the Video card I'd recommend.

have just rung through to OcUK and they still have a rev 1 6950 in stock for the same price. Does this alter anyone's opinion?

6950 (modded to 6970) vs 480 (Oc'd to SOC speeds)?
PSU is a High Power + 650W modular.

I'd still take the 480 over the 6950, I'd rather have the little extras you get with Nvidia cards (PhysX, 3D etc) but that's just my personal preference.

There's not a great deal of difference between either cards in terms of performance, providing you do mod the 6950 to 6970 speeds.

If you intend to go dual GPU later on down the line then the AMD cards would be the better choice, as they tend to scale better than Nvidia at the moment.

Obviously the choice is entirely down to you, although you do seem intent on getting an AMD branded card anyway ;)

I'm sure whatever card you decide to get you won't be disappointed.

As for your PSU, is that the brand "High Power"? Have you got the specs for it?

The GTX 480 draws a lot of power and I'd be slightly concerned if you were to try running it on a below par, cheapy PSU

Hmm, I don't want to sound like a doomsayer but Gareth's right, cheap PSU running expensive high end, high power drawing graphics card could quite easily end in disaster!

thanks for the concern, it has been running an overclocked Q8400 and a 460GTX happily enough and claims to be 80PLUS certified. It certainly wasn't "cheap" but are we saying it is worth replacing? I have ordered a 1090T with 8GB RAM and will be using 3 SATA devices.

The 480 is a totally different beast compared to the 460, it draws a lot more power.

It's entirely up to you whether you want to risk it or not, you could try it I guess, but don't blame me when it goes up in a puff of smoke :p

tbh i would say change it..

how much u payed for it ?

i had a high power 900w which was £75, hence cheapo also unbranded

Any way of telling from the specs whether it's any good or is it just down to the actual quality of the transistors etc? Any recommendations for a decent modular replacement without breaking the bank?

Just suggested this in another thread, but check out this article

In summary - 2 x 5850 = Performance of 580gtx and even beats it in some tests. Best bang for buck, just got to see past buying the last gen.

Thing is you can get the Gigabyte SOC for similar money which is on a par with 580GTX performance without the potential issues that come with crossfire.

it's both really.. unbranded psus don't give what they speced at...

i'd say
