What to expect from replacing compound on reference 980 Ti

Hi guys, I've currently got a reference 980 Ti set to a 1:1 fan profile at worst it gets to around 72 degrees, with a bump in volts 76 degrees, also a little noisy. Now I have another 980 Ti reference on the way since I sold my strix model, now is it worth the risk to remove the cooler off both of them to blow the fans out properly and re-apply the thermal paste? I was thinking about the cool laboratory ultra as that's the best paste I've ever used. What temperature improvements do you think I'll see with the reference cooler? Cheers :)
Also what thermal paste would you recommend? thanks

I replaced the thermal paste on my Titan Xs (Maxwell) which is basically for all intents and purposes the same as what you have, with thermal grizzly kyronaught and noticed at best a 3 degree change at like for like settings. Only so far that refrence cooler can manage that sort of TDP sadly.
 
Try the cool laboratory thermal pad if you can find them, I posted about them a while back but haven't tried as yet, The review numbers, however, are miles ahead of thermal pastes on GPUs. Do not use it if your heatsink has an aluminum base, though. You need copper or nickel plated even on the pads, apparently.
 
Cheers for the response guys! I've used cool lab before in my laptop and it does brilliant! So I've had experience applying it before might give it a go just waiting for my second Ti to come gives me something to do over the weekend as well as bench :p
 
The issue is not so much whether you know what you are doing with the stuff on cpus but what gpu core and their heatsinks are made from.
