What to expect with VPS hosting?

Hopefully this is the right forum to ask about these sorts of things.

I'm considering getting some VPS hosting sorted out at the minute, not because I have a meaty web site to run, but more to have a play around and experiment, but would like to know what sort of thing I can expect from people that have experience with these things.

Basically I have an MSDN subscription, which gives me access to pretty much any Microsoft package for dev purposes.
If I get VPS hosting does that effectively mean I have a virtual machine to do with as I wish? i.e. can I install the stuff from my MSDN subscription on there and play about with it?

It would be a business expense through my company, so not overly bothered about spending a few quid a month on it if I effectively get a machine in a proper data centre connected with a fat pipe to work with.
 
I run a linux server bolted down and never jump on it by remote desktop but I be leave you can do all that (if they allow it) but it can easily get hacked.. best bet is to email or talk live to the hosting company's and ask them if they will allow you to do what you want and is it safe etc.
 
Its a virtualised server instance, eg many visualised instances running on one physical box. As a apposed to a dedicated that is one install one box.

So you will have full control over the box, IIS, installs etc etc. Can install what you like and do what you like.

You wont have an issue installing MSDN stuff. However, MSDN licenses dont cover commercial use. So you want to be careful if your running apps that are bringing in ££. Thats your call to make, not the VPS providers.
 
Cool, thought that would be the case but figured I'd check.
The software will just be used for learning really, so it should all be fine with the MSDN licence terms, but it will be very handy to have a machine connected to the internet that I can access from wherever.

If anyone has any recommendations for Windows VPS hosting please post them here.
 
Rackspace and UK Fast are the dogs ******** in my experience. However im not sure if either do VPS.

Ive used a FastHosts VPS before and they have been fine, good customer service and uptime.
