Love this card but as I game at 1440p I reckon its about time I upgraded as its struggling with a few newer titles at that res. Fine if I drop to 1080p but I loathe doing that when I have a 1440p screen.

I'm half tempted to get an old 980 to just get by for now as I want to upgrade whole PC around start of next year but not sure if that will suffice or I should get a 980ti.

I'm slightly Nvidia fanboi, but I would go the red side if I can find a card to suit.

The thing is, it HAS to be watercooled. I see little point in air cooled as they are always too hot and want to keep existing loop for GPU and CPU.

What are people recommendations, will a 980 be enough @1440p (think Forza, BF1 etc) or should I just go for the Ti or an AMD Fury?
 
You haven't mentioned a budget. AMD doesn't have anything worth going for until Vega. I'd get a 1070 or a 1080.
 
I will consider anything and don't really have a budget but this is purely a 3/4 month stop gap card as I plan on a big build in the new year so lets say around £300-350.

If I could get a WC'd 1070 for the same price as a WC'd 980ti then yes I would consider it, I just don't see that being an option. Fair enough on the AMD cards, I cant wait that long as Xmas is always a big gaming session so want to get sorted sooner rather than later and the 780 just isn't going to cut it for much longer
 
My only concern with the 1070's is they don't overclock very well and Id have to buy a waterblock. That pushes the price into 1080 air cooled.....but I cant do aircooled. Noisy hateful way of cooling!!!
 
To be fair the 1070 and 1080 draw a lot less power than the 780 so the air coolers are very quiet. Both the reference 1080 and EVGA ACX cards that I owned were impressively quiet. I put them underwater anyway but it only benefitted temps.
 
this is why I came to the collective, I thought you lot would be able to convince me a definitive route.

I like watercooling, love the build, love the look, love the lack of noise.

Having recently seem some machines way more powerful than my old 2600k/780, that are both quiet and cool(ish) I am wondering if to get rid of the water.....but I do like clocking stuff and definitely don't like noise...is it still worth it (maybe a question for Watercooling section)

If it's only temporary as in for a few months I'd wait on the 780 set up or get an aftermarket 1070 and leave it on air, It's seems a waste to go through the effort of watercooling a card for an older build you plan on replacing fairly quickly.
 
I'll be replacing the whole build though, so getting this PC better before I start on my next machine seems good sense....otherwise yeah I could leave as is but that means 3-4 months of medium settings......I cant do that for much longer especially when BF1 comes out soon (It was awful playing at 42% and medium settings)
 
No reason you can't bring the card you buy now into your new build. 2600K is still a very capable CPU (I hope, I bought one second hand to upgrade my i5)

I stuck to watercooling when I upgraded from my titan to a 1080. It would be a massive pain and probably a waste of money to revert to air cooling. Plus I like my watercooled setup, it looks cool. The cost of water blocks also stops me upgrading my gpu every 6 months.
