Ok, my mate has a 19" screen, he currently owns a 9600GT and it plays everything brilliantly, apart from Need for Speed which he says stutters at some points.

He is set on getting SLI cards, or atleast something that will lead to it, i was gutted he couldnt xfire 2x4850's.

So anyway i am thinking of advising him on a 8800GTS/GTX right now, then maybe he can get another later on. i know they're sort of getting 'old' now, but i cant see any other alternative that will cost him under £200 as he wants. I'd much rather advise him on a single 4870 tbh, but i can understand how he wants to take advantage of his Motherboard. So what dya say.

Urge him to get one 4870, or will getting a single card, then getting a second later on the right route?

Best single card he can afford, the nfs series isn't a big fan of multi gpu, a single quick card will run much smoother.

As above - generally SLI is a waste of time for NFS games...

a single 4850 will be almost as fast if not as fast as a 9600GT SLI anyhow.

other specs

You did not mention his other specs. The stutter may well be related to CPU.

Also, if he currently has a SLi board then fine, but if he needs to invest in a new board, then x38/p45/x48 may be worth it for him.

He has a Q6600 CPU and 3 gigs of reasonably fast DDR2 Ram (probs 800mhz). He is limited to 3 gigs through XP but im sure its enough
