What to get?

Currently looking to get a new graphics card, my current system:

i7 2600k at 4.4Ghz
GTX 580 (not overclocked).

I have been waiting for the 290x but looking at the reviews I'm not too impressed by the reference cooler and non-reference coolers could still be a month away. I was thinking about maybe buying a cheaper GPU that could do me until next year.

At the moment it seems to be between the 7970 Matrix (although I have been reading that some users have had problems with their purchases recently) or the 280x toxic. I'm not sure about any nvidia offerings because they seem to be a bit too expensive at the moment.

What would be better to get between the two AMD offerings? Or should I be looking at something else?

The 7970 Matrix Platinum can't be beaten at its current price. You might want to wait for the 290 (not 290X) though.

Is SLI an option? You could pick up another used GTX580 for under £100, which would see you until maxwell comes out in Q1 2014.

Obviously you'll need a decent enough PSU and an SLI compatible mobo to do this.

Think I might just wait a bit.

290 details should be released soon, the recent 7970 Matrix batch seems to have been a bit naff and this.

Might also be worth waiting to see if the gaming bundles come out for the 280 and 290 series.

I'm very happy with the matrix, though my advice is if you're in no hurry it might be best to wait for 290x non-reference coolers / 290s, and hopefully a reasonable drop in price on the 780.
